UNITY / Photographs from the Visual Diary of Artist-Couple Nabiha Dahhan and Thom on Exhibit at Gruner + Jahr Pressehaus Starting March 10 th

Gruner + Jahr’s Galerie 11 presents 300 photographs from UNITY, a self-portrait photography project   by the artist-couple Nabiha Dahhan and Thom. Since the couple first met in 1997, a camera has been their constant companion in all the various situations and moods of their everyday life.

The immediacy of the situations – whether on vacation or brushing teeth -, the intimate atmosphere, and the constantly changing facial expressions of the two protagonists give rise to a complex, unsparingly straightforward series of images. As a multi-layered documentary of a couple in constant metamorphosis, the visual diary is striking for its experimental treatment of blurring, colors and details. A deliberate snapshot aesthetic, as used e.g. by the internationally renowned photographer Nan Goldin, also contributes to capturing the various moods.

For Nabiha Dahhan and Thom, the fascination lies in the concept of the self, one’s own personality, as a lifelong process of change. The assumption that a person always remains the same doesn’t do justice to human life. Of course, UNITY is a more intense look at the process of change, explains Nabiha Dahhan.

Nabiha Dahhan, born in Würzburg in 1976, studied Visual Communications at Bielefeld Polytechnic and Photographic and Digital Arts at London’s University of Westminster. She first began working in the field of self-portraits during her studies. Today she lives and works as a freelance photographer in Bremen and Hamburg. Thom was born as Thomas Kolodziej in Kattowitz, Poland in 1974 and has worked with Nabiha Dahhan since 1997.

Gruner + Jahr established Galerie 11 in 1998, to give young photographers an opportunity to present their work to the general public and trade professionals at the Pressehaus in Hamburg. The result is a forum for artistic photography that has become one of Hamburg’s recognized institutions for exhibitions.

UNITY / Fotografien aus dem visuellen Tagebuch des Künstlerpaars Nabiha Dahhan und Thom ab dem 10. März 2006 im Gruner + Jahr Pressehaus zu sehen

Die Galerie 11 von Gruner + Jahr präsentiert 300 Fotografien aus dem Fotoprojekt UNITY von Nabiha Dahhan und Thom, in denen sich das Künstlerpaar selbst porträtiert. Seitdem sie sich 1997 kennen gelernt haben, begleitet die Kamera das Paar in den unterschiedlichsten Situationen und Stimmungen ihres Alltags.

Durch die Unmittelbarkeit der Situationen – sei es im Urlaub oder beim Zähneputzen -, der vertrauten Atmosphäre und dem ständig variierenden Gesichtsausdruck der beiden Porträtierten entsteht eine komplexe Serie von schonungsloser Direktheit. Die vielschichtige Dokumentation des wandlungsreichen Liebespaares zeichnet sich vor allem durch den experimentellen Umgang mit Unschärfen, Farben und Ausschnitten aus. Auch die bewusst eingesetzte Schnappschuss-Ästhetik, wie sie beispielsweise bei der international renommierten Fotografin Nan Goldin zu finden ist, trägt zum Einfangen der jeweiligen Stimmung bei.

Nabiha Dahhan und Thom fasziniert das Konzept des Selbst, der eigenen Persönlichkeit, als lebenslanger Prozess der Veränderung. Die Annahme, man sei immer der Gleiche, wird keinem Menschenleben gerecht. Durch UNITY betrachten wir den Vorgang der Veränderung natürlich intensiver, erklärt Nabiha Dahhan.

Nabiha Dahhan, 1976 in Würzburg geboren, studierte Visuelle Kommunikation an der Fachhochschule Bielefeld und Photographic and Digital Arts an der University of Westminster, London. Sie untersuchte schon während ihres Studiums das Thema des Selbstporträts. Heute lebt und arbeitet sie als selbstständige Fotografin in Bremen und Hamburg. Thom wurde als Thomas Kolodziej, 1974 in Kattowitz, Polen geboren und arbeitet seit 1997 mit Nabiha Dahhan zusammen.

Der Verlag Gruner + Jahr hat 1998 die Galerie 11 ins Leben gerufen, um Nachwuchsfotografen die Möglichkeit zu geben, freie Arbeiten der Öffentlichkeit und dem Fachpublikum im Pressehaus in Hamburg zu präsentieren. So entstand ein Forum für künstlerische Fotografie, das zu den anerkannten Ausstellungsinstitutionen der Hansestadt gehört.
