New Work 2021

New Year Kaleidoscopes 2021

New Year´s Eve 2020>2021
was the first year in the life of most people currently alive
when firecrackers and large groups of people gathering to celebrate the New Year 2021 were not allowed
due to the Corona Pandemic that is still raging around the world this winter (while vaccinations began on December 27 2020).

For me as an artist, the second lockdown since November 2020 (probably continuing until the end of January 2021 or even longer)
was a time that inspired me to dive deep into my archive of works and create something new out of the “old” – instead of creating something new of something new. I still do so today, as there are many drafts, scetches and a lot of raw works in my archive that now feel like a treasure to me, when I re-discover them.

Looking back at 2020 today, the world has experienced about 12 months of the pandemic – a time that turned everything upside down in most people´s lifes. More insecurities and hardship arose and became visible, but humanity also got a glimpse of the power we have if we truly work together.

Finally in 2020 – 40 to 50 years long overdue, so I believe – humanity was forced to unite in one same goal:
in this case: to get rid of this Corona virus and to protect ourselves.

*

As an eco activist since the age of 13 (more than 30 years ago by now) I often felt laughed at when I tried to motivate others to reflect about the ecological impact of our lifesytle, our personal consumption (of plastics) and (artificial) diet.
As a teenager – on a very basic, intuitive level – I had understood that everything is connected somehow (even though I could not understand exactly how). I was surrounded by adults that thought I was simply making trouble and wanted to disturb their balance and security when I tried to talk about this.
For example, I have been called “antisocial” by my own grandmother when I told her that I did not want to eat meat anymore. But this is another story…

All I ever wanted since that time around the 1990ies has been to raise awareness and consciousness that every single act of every human (and especially those humans living in the countries that emit most CO2 into the atmosphere) – has an effect on the whole planet.
People simply did not care when I talked about the Amazonian rainforest in the 199os and how important it is to protect the forest aswell as all other fellow species. They reacted like “yes, yes, it is nice that you care about the trees (“little girl”)” – and ordered their next cheap steak from a mass production farm that fed the poor caged animals with Soya grown on monoculture fields that once were Amazonian rainforest).

“Surprisingly” 10 to 15 years later, those same adults who fought my youthful empathy for this planet and my desire to create a world in balance hard, have begun to suffer classic civilisation disease due to ill lifestyle manners and a refusal to change. By now, some are severely ill and still refuse to see the connection between what we eat and how we care for our own bodies and minds – both need wholesome nourishment.
As a child I suffered several chronic diseases and managed to heal myself beginning with that same wholseome change in diet and lifestyle plus I began to take full responsibility for my own health. I deeply believe that there is a strong connection between how we treat our own bodies – if we look at it as the house for our spirit and mind – and how we treat our homeplanet Earth. But again, this is another story…

*

The knowledge about the devastating effect of mankind on our homeplanet Earth was already scientifically analysed in the 1970s (Club of Rome “Die Grenzen das Wachstums” / “The limits of growth”). Scientists have since been ignored. Striving for more profit in the old capitalist way of thinking still stays top agenda in far too many minds. Today, mankind´s distructive impact on planet Earth is called the Anthropocene – so we have created a word that explains the way our species destroys its only home. Crazy, but true.

Through my own observation of adult behaviour at that time while I was still growing up, I learned that most people only change, when it really hurts. Otherwise most people stay victims to their own unhealthy habits and do not have the willpower and foresight to prevent destructive developements. I recently learned from an interview with a neuroscientist that our brains are not really wired for longterm thinking – but this is what we need if we want to continue enjoying all the beauty that is still out there.

*

2020 hurt. A lot.
Many Corona related deaths would have been preventable if we humans would have kept a respectful distance to nature over the past 50-70 years, so I am convinced. In 2020 many non-biologists have learned about the term “zoonoses”. The rise of more zoonoses has already even been predicted by biologists a couple of years ago – so, I believe, a pandemic like this one, could have been prevented (see for example the biologist Paul Stamets on mycology in his talks from 2011/2021 which can be found on YouTube).
We have also learned what it feels like to keep social distance to protect each other and we have learned that this does not feel nice at all.

In deep love, respect and admiration for this fascinating planet Earth we humans may still exist on for some time, I also wonder, how many deaths of wonderful animals and non-human species would have been preventable if humans would have kept this respectful distance that would have been necessary to keep the balance?

I believe nature is talking to us and maybe she is simply reflecting our own behaviour? One could say, to planet Earth, the human specias is a virus that has spread incontrollably over the last decades. By the year 2020 many eco / climate systems are on the brink of collaps, because of the explosive spreading of our species (German readers see: https://www.zdf.de/wissen/scobel/scobel–systeme-auf-der-kippe-100.html).

*

So I really hope that 2020 tought all humans currently living on planet Earth that:
– Everything is connected
– Viruses cross human borders
– Climate change crosses human borders
– We need to reduce the amount of physical space and matter that we use of this planet if we want to continue existing here and we urgently need to take measures to enforce this reduction
– We need to give back space that we have stolen from other species
– We need to respect all other species the same way we want to be respected as humans – beginning with the bees
– What we experienced in 2020 is a direct result of our own behaviour during the last century – so it is our responsibility change this.
&
– Maybe we do not need firecrackers anymore and will think about creating new, healthier rituals to celebrate the new year,
like, for example shooting plant seeds into the sky together with a colourful LED light projection show?!
(I know, this is not the proper way to plant seeds and make them grow, but I love the idea of it…)

We can make this change. It is in our hands and minds – now.
I believe, saving and protecting our home planet Earth is basically “only” in our own interest. We should be able manage these changes if we want to survive. We need to get out of this mode of self-destruction into self-love and from there to universal love and respect for this complete wonder of existence.

*

Making another wish
The last money I spent in 2020 was for the ticket for a live performance concert of another artist couple – and the first activitiy I did on January 01 2021 was enjoying this live session concert in the new digital form on my laptop.

2020 was also very brutal on all professional artists. Visual, musical, performing artists could not work in the same way that was already hard before, but still fulfilling. In 2020 for most artists the fulfilling part and for many sadly also the existential part disappeared. At the same time people in lockdown mentally survived on the consumption of art in the form of visuals, audio and text.

I wish that from 2021 on
all profesisonal artists shall receive all the appreciation that they deserve.
Every full time artist who has devoted her life and complete existence to the creation and expansion of consiousness
by enriching other people´s minds and hearts with new ways of seeing, thinking, and perceiving,
should get all the support she needs
from all those who love to enjoy visuals, music, and text. So basically namely from everyone.

Please continue to enjoy growing with the flow & keep staying save and inspired!

New work: Hridaya, Samsara & Alaka

More works from India 2017 / 2020

Hridaya

According to Ramana Maharshi, the great Advaita master,
“The godly atom of the Self is to be found in the right chamber of the heart,
about one finger-width’s distance from the body’s midline.
“Here lies the Heart, the dynamic Spiritual Heart.
It is called Hridaya, is located on the right side of the chest, and is clearly visible
to the inner eye of an adept on the Spiritual Path.
Through meditation you can learn to find the Self in the cave of this Heart.”
The word Hridaya is a composite of hrid and ayam, meaning “center, heart, and this.”

Samsara
According to Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and Wordly Affairs:
Samsara is the continuous cycle of life, death, and reincarnation envisioned in Hinduism
and other Indian religions. In Hindu and Buddhist practice, samsara is the endless cycle of life and death
from which adherents seek liberation. In Hinduism, the prominent belief is that samsara is a feature of a life
based on illusion (maya). Illusion enables a person to think s/he is an autonomous being
instead of recognizing the connection between one’s self and the rest of reality.
Believing in the illusion of separateness that persists throughout samsara
leads one to act in ways that generate karma and thus perpetuate the cycle of action and rebirth.
By fully grasping the unity or oneness of all things, the believer has the potential to break the illusion
upon which samsara is based and achieve moksha — liberation from samsara.

Whereas moksha (liberation) acts as the positive motivation for Hindu religious practice,
samsara is the negative motivation from which Hindus seek liberation.
The undesirable nature of samsara comes from its unpredictability — people are unaware
of how the actions or karma in their present life will affect their future.
Because past lives affect future ones, a person is never sure about their reincarnation
and the suffering that might accompany it because of past actions.
As the Indian conception of human existence (prior to one’s enlightenment),
samsara is a central component of all religions originating in India.
Buddhists and Sikhs view samsara in much the same way as Hindus,
and Buddhists particularly stress the concept that life is a form of suffering
that is encountered and perpetuated through samsara.
Jainism sees samsara as a base and mundane form of existence that one ought to renounce.

* * *

Alaka
In Hinduism, Alaka (Sanskrit: अलक), which is also sometimes called Alakapuri, is a mythical city.
It is the home of Kubera, the king of Yakshas and the lord of wealth, and his attendants called yakshas.
The Mahabharata mentions this city as the capital of the Yaksha Kingdom.
It is said to be situated on one of the spurs of the Mount Meru in the exalted Himalayas.

Story: No Holiday

Here is a strange  STORY – about not making a holiday:

In late January 2020 – after good business in 2019 – we thought about planning a holiday.
Usually we prefer to leave winter when it is most annoying to us and also before garden season starts again: around February.

We would begin to research destinations which we still would love to see in this lifetime. But this time something was different.

We believe we are no frequent travelers.
We have not been flying that much during the past 23 years – less than one flight per year on average. (Is this a lot compared to others?)

After we made our first long distance flight to amazing Thailand in 2004 we decided that we would generally never fly that far for only a short period of time,
because it is such a hassle to fly, never comfortable and simply did not feel right to jump around in planes only for staying somewhere for a short time and then leave again soon. During that Thailand trip we stayed for 4 weeks and really felt we had a chance to connect with the land, culture and people. It was a wonderful backpackers’s experience.

We always thought that traveling is something very valuable, special, and expensive – especially for the finances of a self-employed artist/photographer
who is always at risk to miss a job while away – as well as for the environment.
For us, traveling is something that should not be taken lightly and should be done very consciously.

Also, we believe that the (cosmic) radiation and the air in airplanes are not so healthy for the human body,
so after this first long distance flight we took in 2004 we decided to only fly when it really makes sense to us
(for example working/producing a project or an artist residency).

Since we have always been interested in a real travel experience, we believe that traveling slowly with time and gratitude is the way we would do it.
As artists we want to immerse deeply into experiencing other cultures and we believe this cannot be done in a „cruise ship“ manner.

We believe flying is a luxury and should be treated as one.
We were never interested when those cheap flights came up that make you jump around Europe for a weekend.
Not only, because we think there can be no healthy correlation between the resources spent and the experience one can have,
but also because we think that one cannot be really there, if one is not really there – arriving on a Friday and leaving on a Sunday.

I am quite sure we would think differently if flying would be possible with 100 % renewable energy and would be CO2 neutral
or if there would be a safe way to beam/transport humans like in STAR TREK.
Everyone who consumes energy and resources has responsibility.

So in 2019 we booked our first real holiday in 7 years. We chose the Seychelles, because we hoped we could still see some healthy corals and snorkel a bit.
The medium intense online research led us to believe that the corals there are still okay.
But: even though we went to supposedly good locations for snorkeling we saw 90 % dead corals. Thom was devastated.
I tried to keep up the holiday mood, and superficially enjoy the surface of the sea,
but we were both very shocked by the ill condition of underwater life in the areas we saw.

The Seychelles already are very eco conscious, because they know that healthy nature is crucial for their (only) economy,
which is tourism. It was sad to see that they are already fighting to keep up the beauty.

We then began a long discussion which went on over several weeks. We dove deep into our conscience:
was it worth spending so much money to see dead corals?
By traveling with such high consumption in CO2 + other poisons, we are definitely contributing to that same climate change
we so much want to help preventing in our daily life and are, of course, therefor in a way partly co-responsible for the dead corals.

Thom soon reached a very radical conclusion:
he decided to make NO HOLIDAY in 2020 because for him, the whole hassle of spending so much money,
being cramped in an airplane, contributing to climate change by that and then being disillusioned by nature out of balance was not worth it for him.

Also: he had checked our climate footprint (WWF tool) earlier and realized
that we are destroying almost all our organic gardening and green lifestyle efforts with one single flight per year.
https://www.wwf.de/themen-projekte/klima-energie/wwf-klimarechner
https://footprint.wwf.org.uk

The result was that our CO2 footprint is better than that of the average German – even including 4 flights in the last 5 years (!).
The worst point is the oil heating in the house we live in, but we are currently unfortunately not in the position to change that.

Thanks to our sustainability choices in all other aspects of our lives which we have been extending over the last 32 years
(Nabiha, becoming eco-conscious at the age of 11) and 23 years (Thom, gaining that same sense inspired by Nabiha at the age of 23)
our CO2 consumption is much less than average, but the flights again add too much CO2 in the end.

So in late January 2020 Thom decided he could not live with this – so no holiday by plane in 2020.

Thom was particularly strict about not flying this year – which was a bit strange.
To me, we already were living by our own „rule“ of reducing possible flights to maximum one per year.

I completely agreed with him on the rational level. But emotionally I began to revolt:
why should we be the only ones forgoing a holiday while everyone else just gives a s*** and flying becomes even more popular each year?
Exploring new strange places, nature and cultures is one of my deepest desires as a photographer and artist.

It made me very sad to realize that if I love nature so much I should not continue damaging Gaia by consuming that much CO2 by flying.

For me, this is a really tough dilemma which I almost can not dissolve at this time of my life.
On the one hand, I want to promote the „unity of mankind“: getting as many people from all over the world closer together in our hearts and minds.
I am taking my individual role and responsibility as an artist seriously.
I want to encourage people from all over the world to connect and exchange thoughts and visions of a healthy life in balance.

On the other hand, I want to protect nature.
But, if „we all“ continue flying (consuming CO2) so much while we are connecting on a global scale (which is great) –
we will destroy the only home we all have at the same time: planet Earth.

So, we urgently need to change.

Flying should be CO2 neutral – this would be my dream!
I strongly believe that traveling helps people to realize that we are all one human species on this planet
and it helps to realize that we are all the same in our hopes, fears, loves and dreams and desires (The „unity“ spirit the world needs…).

I don’t want to imagine a world were traveling is not allowed anymore.
I believe that all transportation must become CO2 neutral and fueled by renewable energy – immediately.
But this will take some time.

As usual, human beings tend to change their behavior only when it really hurts.
Unfortunate it has been too easy to exhaust oil and coal – but now we finally realize the true costs
behind the unconscious exploitation of planet Earth since the industrial revolution began.

(Also we think that compensating flights by paying extra for planting trees is eyewash, firstly because:
the poisons emitted by airplanes/cruise ships are in the air and it is a general difference if poison is emitted or not,
and secondly: young trees cannot compensate much CO2, because they are still too small and still need 10 to 30 years fo grow.
This is why it is so important to protect all trees on the planet that are still here!)

Then there was this moment in our discussion when I said to Thom
„It would be okay for me if EVERYONE would be forbidden to fly!
I would even agree to a worldwide 5 year flight-ban if this would help reduce global warming!
Imagine this: the whole world working together saving CO2 to ward off climate catastrophes!”

Thom and I are willing to cut down our consumption even more and we would still feel rich inside.
During all last years of getting more and more into organic gardening, we realized that we feel more rich and grateful
the more nature we have in our lives and the more healthy the plants and trees that surround us are.

We believe there is a huge potential for all societies with high rates of CO2 to cleverly change to a sustainable society
– without the feeling of loss. The time to change is now.

Just imagine: if reincarnation was real, would you like to come back to planet Earth in let´s say 100/200 or 500 years?
What I mean: maybe we are not only leaving behind this planet for the children,
but for ourselves? So how would you like this planet to be for your next lifetime?

In our discussion about our own ethics towards flying we then came to the conclusion
that flying only every other year also saves at least some CO2.

I humbly accepted my „fate“ of not being able to escape the annoying German winter this year
and began to work on projects that I didn’t find the time for so far (which is very fulfilling).

All this ethical discussion about traveling by airplane happened while the Corona Virus was still in China.
The flights we would have booked would have been between mid February and mid March
– exactly the time when Corona officially arrived in Germany (around Feb 26) and Bavaria started the lockdown on Mach 20 2020.

Looking back to our discussion and Thom´s strong urge of not flying this year now feels like a very impressive intuition
which definitely saved us from a lot of trouble. It now feels like he protected us from an unpleasant experience which would have costed money,
blown a lot of CO2 into the atmosphere and quite sure not have been a proper holiday experience – apart from the risk of contributing to the spread of the virus.

Two of our shows for 2020 have now been postponed to 2021.
It is sad not to be able to exhibit our work physically – but we are now all connected digitally
and a new sense of humility, solidarity and empathy arises.
Maybe our digital tools will be able to help us save the planet and the physical and spiritual health of all humans, too?

We are now enjoying our creative self quarantine and discovering even more wonders that lie within ourselves,
hoping for the world to become more healthy and balanced through this global wake up call.

Stay strong & healthy, everyone!

New work: VARAHA II

VARAHA II, 2020

is a photo montage and my second collaboration with a boar.
I was visiting an animal park in Germany and photographed the reflections of the trees
on the water surface of a pond inside a boar´s fence.

After some time a huge boar came to bathe inside this pond.
At first I was irritated because he „destroyed“ the clean tree reflections represented in this series called VARAHA II.
Soon I saw the bizarre patterns that originated from the water surface –
taking the shapes of animal spirits and all forms of phantastic figures (see my series VARAHA I)
– a truly inspirational encounter with a very strong and important animal.

Interview mit Singulart!

„ (…) Welche Ideen verteidigt Ihr in Eurer Kunst?
UNITY – und * celebrate life! *.

Die Abschlussprojekte für Nabihas Studiengänge in London (Is a self-portrait a portrait of the self?, 2001) und Bielefeld (The Dream, 2004) waren Schlüsselerlebnisse unserer gemeinsamen Entwicklung als Künstlerpaar.

Daher: * Celebrate Life! *.

Sacred Grove, 2016

Fabruary 2018:
* FINALIST of the ART OF ENGINEERING award by Ferchau Engineering *

April 2018
Interview
vom Ferchau ART OF ENGINEERING award 2017/2018 über unsere Serie THE WEAVER
www.ferchau.com/the-weaver-der-ursprung-der-digitalisierung

* * *

THE WEAVER is a new, so far unpublished series that we produced a few weeks ago
during one of our artist residencies in India in cooperation with the Raj Art Initiative.
The Raj Group is on of the oldest weaving factories in Panipat, north India.
For us, the processes of machine production symbolise the pre digital age in a fascinating way.
With the images we have created we have made a connection between the analoge and digital age:
the wool/weaving patterns and lines inside the sewing machines
could be seen like a pre-digital combination of „0“ and „1“s, creating patterns that look like digital data streams,
symbolising movement, structure, progress, change and in a way the „digitalness“ that is part of our lives today.

Kaya Vyuha

Kaya Vyuha (Sanskrit: कायव्यूह kāyavyūha) is the mystical process of forming with the mind
or inhabiting one or several new bodies.
This occurs when a soul reincarnates or when a yogi uses his consciousness
to form additional bodies to speed the exhaustion of his karma.

As a pastimes with her beloved Krishna, the goddess Radha expands and manifests
her Kaya Vyuha, the 108 Gopis, each one with her own form, sentiments and moods.

___________
